The Saturday Market
Every Saturday, Tom goes to the market in the main square. He takes a big bag and a short list: tomatoes, onions, bananas and cheese.
The market is noisy and colorful. The sellers shout the prices, and the air smells of fresh bread and strawberries.
First, Tom stops at the vegetable stall. “Good morning! How much are the tomatoes?” “Three euros a kilo,” says the woman. “Two kilos, please.”
He also buys one kilo of onions for two euros. In total, he pays eight euros. He gives the woman a ten-euro note, and she gives him two euros back.
At the fruit stall, the bananas are very ripe. The seller says: “Take six bananas for one euro fifty. They are perfect for a cake!”
Tom smiles and buys the bananas. Then he sees some red strawberries. They are not on his list, but they look delicious, so he buys a small box.
The last stop is the cheese stall. The cheese seller lets him taste three different cheeses. Tom chooses a soft goat cheese.
At home, Tom puts everything on the table. His bag is heavy, but his list is complete, plus one little extra: the strawberries for dessert.
