The Violinist in the Square

Every Saturday, the main square was full of noise: children running, pigeons flying, sellers shouting the prices of corn and balloons. Elisa watched it all from her window with her violin on her lap.

She had studied music for twelve years, but she had never played in front of strangers. When people looked at her, her hands started to shake and she forgot every note.

Her teacher had given her a strange piece of advice: “Don't play for the crowd. Choose one person and play only for them.” Elisa did not know if it would work.

That Saturday, she finally went down. She opened the violin case on the ground, took a deep breath and looked around the square for her one person.

On a bench near the fountain, an old woman was feeding the pigeons. She looked tired and a little sad. Elisa lifted the violin and started to play for her.

It was an old waltz, slow and sweet. At first, nobody noticed. Then the old woman raised her head, closed her eyes and began to move her hand to the music.

Little by little, the square grew quieter. The sellers stopped shouting, the children stopped running, and a small crowd formed around the fountain. Elisa did not see them. She was playing for one person only.

When the last note ended, there was a moment of silence, and then applause. Elisa opened her eyes, surprised. Her case was full of coins and flowers.

The old woman walked up to her slowly. “My husband and I danced to that waltz at our wedding,” she said. “Thank you for bringing him back for a few minutes.”
