The Lost Cat

When Sara comes home from school, her cat Pepper is not in the house. He is not on the sofa, not under the bed and not in his basket.

The kitchen window is open. “Oh no, he went outside!” says Sara. She takes a piece of paper and draws a map of the street with all the houses and shops.

First, she looks in the garden, behind the trees and under the old car. She finds a ball and a shoe, but no cat.

Then she goes to the bakery on the corner. “Have you seen a black cat with white feet?” she asks. The baker shakes his head. “Sorry, not today.”

Sara puts posters on the trees and at the bus stop: “LOST CAT – Pepper – black with white feet.” She writes her phone number at the bottom.

It starts to get dark. Sara is tired and sad. She sits on the steps in front of her house and looks at the empty street.

Suddenly, her phone rings. It is Mrs. Lima, the neighbor next door. “Sara, I think your cat is on my roof. He is meowing very loudly!”

Sara runs next door. Pepper is on the roof, next to the chimney, looking down at her. With a ladder and a lot of patience, they bring him home safe and sound.
